for the past 2000 years tibetan buddhist have created sand mandala's for the benefit of all sentient beings. this past saturday the american theater played host to the monks of drepung monastery who performed traditional dance and music, as well as, created a sand mandala for compassion. the mandala is for the compassion of all sentient beings. it is both meditative and spiritual practice for the monks who spend days painting these intricate mandalas with sand, only to be ceremonially swept away and poured into a running stream, because it, as with all things, is not permanent and does not last. we too, are like the mandala, only temporary in this form and soon we too will wash back into the great stream that turns the wheel of life. as i ponder upon the mandala my wish for all, is that we find an end to suffering as we learn true bodhisattva compassion for every sentient being.
she has got to be the geekiest knitter i have ever run across, apple logo caps, space invaders? she even has a ball of yarn and knitting needles stuck through it tattooed on her left wrist! what pushes her over the top though, is her latest endeavor, the mario scarf project. cassie is actually knitting the entire first level of super mario world into a scarf! here it is well on its way:
check this guy out the 45 king dj he's a bad ass with a 7"....
being an npr junkie, i have become intimately close with many of its programs, one of my favorites being the bryant park project, which has been one of the most innovative, most digital savvy programs to come out on the radio to date. so it is with great sadness to hear that the bryant park project is having its proverbial plug pulled all because of the almighty dollar. it's national public radio for crying out loud, if an innovative program such as bpp can't make it we're forever doomed to clear channel dumbed down radio. listeners were able to read and respond to the blog, twitter responses to the program etc all while getting the great news and stories we've come to expect from npr, along with great live music, such as recent guest's death cab for cutie! i'm not sure what hope there is for life after death for the bpp, but it saddens me every time something innovative and cutting edge is killed all for a buck and what are we left with? a sorry, boring cookie cutter world. here's to you bryant park project, thanks for the innovative programming and entertainment!
i love flickr's open api. there are so many great ways to trick out flickr. one that really caught my eye is the flickr postcard browser. just type in a tag and the browser does the rest!
you can now find me at my new other home as well, www.scottthieman.com. i've been meaning to have a site in my name for awhile. i will still update here, but will probably be updating a little more often there as it will be a little more open and personal, while this site will be more dedicated to art, environment, my practice, but also will still contain the musings of a madman.... with the recent media attention now on china and the olympic games and the international eyes back on the tibetan plight. i thought it would be appropriate to share once again one of my favorite tibetan artist who through his art has quietly been making both a political statement and that of a spiritual one, not just to the people of tibet, but to the world, gonkar gyatso, has taken traditional tibetan art form and mixed it with contemporary medium, society, politics and buddhism to create something altogether new and exciting. for me he is the living breathing embodiment of a bodhisattva of art. gonkar's creations are one of a kind, and is just what is needed more than ever in the west.
i finally updated the left column, including an explanation of the site being a repository of my meanderings, interests, philosophies on life and a collection of ephemera i have come across over the years. it is a site where i can share my photographic eye, which i plan on doing more of in the future. it has provided an outlet for my passion for music, art, the environment and love for philosophical meanderings. it is an outlet for self expression and provides a certain solace for me, like the old man who sits on the same park bench everyday, here is a place i can go that has that feeling of familiarity, peace and even though it changes as the seasons change it still is that bench, that favorite path in the woods or that favorite coffee shop just down the street, it is that box with no walls, sides or a lid, that holds all and yet nothing at all....
if you have not experienced the rise of women's roller derby you are really missing out on some fun fast and often rough action. here in the tidewater, i've been lucky enough to watch and experience the outcome of the dominion derby girls over the last two years. their latest bout was against the steel city derby demons and the girls crushed them easily. this isn't the derby of old on the banked tracks, check out women's flat track derby association if you are interested in learning about the sport. go here if you want to find out about the dominion derby girls.
you can check out my flickr set to see the bout on Feb 17th against the steel city derby demons. |
